About The Artist

Felice Mazzoni is best known for his modern monochromatic landscape depictions and minimalist twisted windblown trees.Felice’s relationship with the west coast landscape stems from his experiences and memories having been born in Tofino and raised in Ucluelet on Vancouver Island, Canada, where the rugged beauty of the West Coast and the Pacific Rim National Park became an indelible part of his upbringing. Growing up with the sea as his neighbor and the pristine wilderness as his backyard, Felice's shares his experiences and memories through his art.As an emerging artist, Felice only recently discovered his hidden talent during Covid and began painting on his dining room table late at night during the lockdowns. Felice is self-taught and utilizes the traditional approach of free-hand oil painting without any sketching or tracing and is one of only a few artists that currently paints monochromatic realism landscapes and seascapes. With oil as his medium, Felice builds the surfaces of his canvases with many layers of thinned paint and is particularly known for his fine detailing and use of light in his pieces. He often will use luminosity to highlight individual landscapes and to emphasize the individual features be it the ocean, trees, sand and weather. Light is the essential element that threads his works together as Felice notes, “I want the subjects of my oil paintings to exhibit emotion, for the audience to experience the gnarly bent trees… to smell the ocean and feel the wind”.Felice’s use of light and shadow was recently honored by the Maryland Federation of Art by awarding Felice with the “Juror's Choice” Award in the 6th Annual Light and Shadow International Art Competition and the "Best in Show" Award at the Camelback Gallery Black and White International Juried Award Exhibition.Although Felice now lives in Victoria, British Columbia, he often visits the coast and beaches where he grew up to get new inspiration for his work and now shares his art with the world, selling his pieces both locally and internationally to collectors.

Felice wins Juror's Choice Award at Maryland Federation of Art's 6th Annual Light and Shadow International Art Competition.

Felice Mazzoni

Juried by Jon-Phillip Sheridan, Department Chair of Photography and Film at Virginia Commonwealth University, of 307 total entries by 109 artists, 38 artists were shortlisted with two of Felice's paintings shortlisted (Tree-line & Lonely Man) with "Tree-Line" winning. Felice was the only Canadian artist to win an award."In historical paintings and our cultural visual heritage, light often symbolizes virtue, holiness, enlightenment, or otherworldliness, while shadow is frequently associated with malevolence, chaos, or concealed dangers. However, there exists a seemingly contradictory association with shadow—a realm of invisibility and safety—a refuge for those on the margins of society." I looked for works that played with hiding and revealing legibility to invoke moods or suggest the unknown. I looked for works that used light and shadow to make the mundane surprising and used drama to add theatricality to the everyday I looked for works that suggested other worlds. - Jon-Phillip SheridanBoth paintings will be showcased in Maryland Federation of Art's Curve Gallery until Jan 31, 2024.
